The 2012 World Chess Championship is taking place in Moscow, Russia on May 11-30 and features two of the best players in the game today: Defending World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand (India) and World Chess Championship Challenger Boris Gelfand (Israel). These two seasoned veterans in the chess elite are fighting it out for a prize fund of $2.5 million dollars (the winner will receive $1.5 million and the loser will receive $1 million). While Anand [...]

What is Chess Friction?

Posted on May 17, 2012 by in General Chess Articles

The essence of chess war is struggle between two opposing armies, or two hostile and irreconcilable wills of the generals of the two armies, each trying to impose itself on the other. It is like a pair of wrestlers locked in a hold, each exerting force and counterforce trying to throw the other. Chess war is therefore a process of continuous mutual adaptation, of give and take, move and countermove. The key here is that [...]

Kasparov vs Fischer in the Sicilian Najdorf, The Opocensky Variation with 6. Be2

Posted on May 16, 2012 by in All Articles w/ Videos, Classic Games (Pre 2010), Strategy & Game Review

The Opocensky Variation of the Sicilian Najdorf with 6. Be2 remains one of the most commonly played lines for white against the Najdorf. In Fischer’s time in the 1950s and 1960s, more aggressive variations such as the Fischer-Sozin Attack, the 6. Bg5 Main Line, and the 6. f4 Amsterdam Variation were favored over the quieter Opocensky Variation with 6. Be2. However sufficient sources of counterplay were identified for black against the sharper continuations, and in [...]

Rose-Colored Glasses

The value of the truth is an enduring trope of the American cinema. In Tom Cruise’s Vanilla Sky, the protagonist is offered a choice to live in a world of his fancy, or to face the sometimes-gritty truth of a world far more real. Ditto the Matrix movie in which the main character can take either the blue pill or red pill. I chose the red one and, apparently, was involved in a chess game shortly [...]

What his students are saying:

“Will was as in-person chess tutor in Atlanta for my 12-year-old but convinced me to switch over to his cheaper online chess classes. My son enjoys the chess classes just as much, I’m paying $15 less per class and I don’t have to battle Alpharetta traffic for his chess lessons anymore.”

Ashlee Huáng (mother of Daniel Huáng) - Decatur, Georgia - USA

“When my FIDE rating surpassed 1900 I knew I needed an FM or IM chess tutor but there were only 2 chess teachers in the Toronto area that were IMs, both charging $50-$60CAD per hour. Then I found Chess tutor Wiliam Stewart. The flexibility of his online chess classes is great. My FIDE is now over 2050!”

Steve N - Toronto, Canada

“Since my first online chess lesson with Will my FIDE has gone up from 1600 to over 1800 in only 7 months. I really enjoy his fun approach to chess tutoring. He’s much better than any other chess tutor in Boston that I’ve used. I feel this has to do with the fact that I’m also a young chess player so it’s easier to relate. Thanks for the great chess lessons.”

Fernando Langoni - Boston, Massachusetts

“After not being able to find a good chess tutor in Philadelphia for my 8 year old son, I tried out some classes with chess teacher William. I’ve been quite pleased with the results as he is a very patient chess tutor and I would thoroughly recommend him.”

Steven Feldman - Wilmington, Delaware

On behalf of the Albany State University Chess club, we really appreciate the online group lessons Will did for us. We highly recommend anyone who wants to learn chess to take lessons with Will and his team. Great teacher all around the board.

John McAllister, Albany State University - Chess Club President - Albany.EDU

“I didn’t understand why chess tutors in Washington wanted to charge me $50USD an hour at his chess clubs for private chess tutoring, it was totally outrageous. I’m really glad I found chess tutor William Stewart. He seems to be very passionate about chess and he has a very flexible schedule as well. Not only has my son improved at chess, he’s also begun to be passionate about it.”

Eltsina Gorbachov (class for Egor Gorbachov), Alexandria, VA

I know there are not a lot of women that are into chess, but playing poker got me into playing chess and the chess scene in Miami is virtually non-existent. After failing to find a chess tutor in Miami I found Will Stewart’s website. I’ve so far only taken 3 classes from chess teacher Will but I’m quite pleased with the results. I like how he relates chess to poker as well, which is my other passion.

Tina Silowinsky, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

I could not find any decent chess teachers in Sacramento. It seemed like my only option was to drive to see a chess tutor in San Francisco, which involved a one hour drive and $45 a class. Luckily I found chess tutor William Stewart. I’m pretty happy with the results so far although I’m not so sure I’ll have time to continue taking online chess classes because of my hectic job. Either way, thanks a lot for the help!

Jim O'Donnel, Sacramento, California

I purchased chess classes for my 2 teenage sons and I have to say so far I’m impressed. He’s done a better job than any other chess tutor in Detroit. I thought that chess classes over the internet might not be as good as taking the chess lessons in-person but my kids seem to be improving and enjoying the classes and I’m paying less for the both of them than I was for only one of my kids before. Thank you Will!

Lori McPherson - Warren, Michigan

Chess in Houston isn’t what it is in New York or Philadelphia so I really had trouble finding a chess tutor in Houston. It seems there are better chess tutors in Dallas and Austin, perhaps as a residual effect of Susan Polgar’s involvement at Texas Tech. Either way this didn’t really help me much. Will’s been a very patient chess tutor and I’m pleased with the results so far. Perhaps I’ll send Will a follow-up testimonial in the future to let you all know how I’ve progressed.

Scottsdale isn’t exactly known for having great chess so it was not surprising that I had trouble finding a good chess tutor in Phoenix for my kid. He’s always reading up the latest news on chess and is fascinated by the game. Getting setup for the classes was a peace of cake and my son has been pleased by the classes so far.

Tommy H, Phoenix Arizona.

Hello,

Although I’ve only taken chess lessons for a short time from chess teacher William Stewart but I feel like I’ve learned a lot. Good chess tutors in Seattle are hard to find so I really appreciate this service, I never even knew such a thing existed. We’ll see if I’ll continue taking chess classes, but so far I’m pleased with the results.
